One of the most frequent Florida homeowners insurance claims made in the state each year is for damage caused by hail. The answer is generally no, as most are constructed with a form of tempered glass which is designed to withstand most hail. Standard solar panels contain glass which is up to six times stronger than normal glass, and their angled positioning to catch the sun usually means they are dealt only a glancing blow in hailstorms. Nevertheless, damage can still occur in areas where very large hailstones are common.

Here it is important to ensure that solar panels are covered in your homeowners insurance, particularly if they have been recently installed. A quick check with your insurance provider or agent will usually verify that this is the case. However if this isn’t the case, consider updating your coverage.
