Ft Lauderdale, like many regions in the south of Florida, experiences a distinct hurricane season between June 1 and November 30. Indeed the city was hit by Hurricanes Wilma and Katrina in 2005 which both caused significant damage. It is important to check that your Ft Lauderdale insurance covers you in the event of hurricane damage, as most homeowners insurance is not broad enough to cover this.

However, along with having the correct insurance in place, it is important to take steps to strengthen your home from such weather events, particularly if you live in an area likely to be affected. You can do this in three key places: your roof, your garage door and the doors and windows.

High winds during a storm or hurricane should be prevented from entering your house at all costs as they can send furniture and possessions flying causing danger and destroying your house from the inside. Ensure that your garage door is certified as “impact resistant” as this is usually the most common entry point for high winds due to the door's size - if it’s not, consider having a qualified person install a reinforced model.  Likewise reinforce doors and windows, and check if they are listed as “hurricane-proof” – if they’re not purchase, look into purchasing special strengthened material to prevent glass and debris from entering the house.

Finally the last thing you want is to have your roof lifted off during high winds. Secure this with hurricane straps. These are attached to the support beams and should be fitted by a qualified builder.
